1850: Fort Kongenstein, a small fort built at Ada by the Danish in 1783 was purchased on this day by the English. A greater portion of the fort has been washed away by the sea waves

1921: Erica Powell, private secretary to President Kwame Nkrumah and later President Siaka Stevens of Sierra Leone, was born on this day at Brighton in Sussex, England. She worked for Nkrumah from 1955 to 1965. She was part of the Sierra Leone’s official delegation at Nkrumah’s funeral in 1972. Erica Powell died on June 5 2007.

1941: Professor Atukwei Okai was born John Atukwei Okai in Accra on this day. He was a poet, cultural activist and academic. He was Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers’ Association and former president of the Ghana Association of Writers. Atukwei Okai died on July 13 2018.
